Understanding the Push-Pull Model:
Rackham identified two fundamental communication styles:
Directing (Blue): This is a "push" style, where you provide information and instructions directly. It's efficient for clear directives but can feel domineering.
Involving (Green): This is a "pull" style, where you ask questions, encourage participation, and build consensus. It fosters engagement but can be time-consuming.
The key lies in finding the right balance. Rackham suggests a "Push-Pull" approach:
Push (Blue): Use this when time is limited, decisions are clear, or dealing with established procedures.
Pull (Green): Use this when building consensus, delegating tasks, or fostering creativity.
Finding the right balance also involves, recognising when we may be Shutting Out, Defending or Attacking (Red) in our communication styles. Rackham's model highlights these areas for us to consciously try to void using these.
Leading with Flexibility:
Here's how you can leverage Rackham's model in your leadership:
Identify Your Team's Styles: Observe how your team members communicate. Do they prefer clear instructions or open discussions?
Adapt Your Approach: Match your communication style to the situation and the individual. Use "Blue" for quick decisions and "Green" for collaborative problem-solving.
Empower Through Participation: Don't underestimate the power of "Green" behaviors. Including team members in decision-making leads to increased ownership and buy-in.
Develop Communication Agility: Practice switching between "Push" and "Pull" styles. This adaptability fosters trust and positions you as a versatile leader.
Embedding Rackham's Model in Your Workplace:
As leaders, you want some quick wins on how to embed models such as Rackham's. You can introduce the model through workshops or training sessions. Help your team understand the "Push-Pull" dynamic and its benefits.
Once your team know and understand Rackham, incorporate communication style discussions into performance reviews. This helps employees understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
To ensure the model is being embedded, use role-playing exercises to practice applying Rackham's model in different scenarios. This fosters team communication and collaboration.
Lastly, develop team communication guidelines that encourage a balance of "Push" and "Pull" styles depending on the situation.
